501 Oakley Road, Haverford, PA.

By 1876, Haydock Garrigues and Sidney his wife had made the decision to leave the farmhouse at 620 College Avenue and build a new house closer to the Haverford Friends Meeting and Haydock's sisters who by this time had sold their house at 833 Buck Lane and had built themselves individual houses ( see above map.)  Haydock's new house was finished prior to 1881, although it is not clear if Haydock ever slept there before he passed away on July 3, 1877.

This property eventually became 501 Oakley Road, Haverford, PA. The road received its name after the oak trees Haydock had planted on this section of his farm.

By 1887, Sidney Sharpless Garrigues (age 83) had transferred the deed to her 501 Oakley Road property to their eldest daughter Sarah P. Garrigues (1).

The 1900 census shows Sidney was still living at 501 Oakley Road even though she had previously deeded her property to her eldest daughter Sarah P. Garrigues. (2).  Sidney was living with her daughters, Annie (age 46), Hannah (age 42), and Mary. Mary's husband, Richard S. Dewees (age 34) also lived in the same house and was paying rent.  Richard had become manager of the much smaller twelve-acre Millbrook Farm recently purchased by J. Franklin McFadden which later became 620 College Avenue, Haverford, PA. (3).

During this timeframe, Sarah P. was living with her brother Samuel M. at 748 Millbrook Lane, Haverford, PA. helping to take care of his household since Samuel was without a wife at the time. Also living with Samuel, were his two children, six borders, and two servants. Samuel's brother, John S. lived a block away on College Avenue, across from Haverford College (4).

2.  Actual location of 501 Oakley house: The 1900 Census shows Elizabeth Mount and Chas Mount as neighbors to Sarah P. Garrigues's house which corresponds to 1900 J. L. Smith Atlas - Plate 14.

3. 1900 census shows Richard S. Dewees had become manager of Millbrook Farm and was living under the roof of Sidney Garrigues at 501 Oakley Road.

4. The 1900 census confirmed Sarah was living at her brother Samuel M. Garrigues' house. The 1900 J. L. Smith Atlas - Plate 14 not shown here confirmed the location of Samuel's house on Millbrook Lane which was not far from his brother John S. Garrigues' property.
