Haverford Public School #5
Photo taken in June 1897

The photo above of the plaque indicates that Haverford Public School #5 was built in 1876 (1). The two-room red brick schoolhouse was built on farmland that previously belonged to Haydock Garrigues. The school property later became 747 Buck Lane and is located just west of Railroad Avenue. The school building no longer exists, except for the back basement wall  (2).

Pennsylvania school authorities referred to the schoolhouse as "Haverford Pub Sch No. 5" through June 1886 (3). This schoolhouse remained in operation until the Preston Public School building opened its doors a block away on Martin Avenue sometime in 1914 or 1915.

1.  According to a plaque, located at 747 Buck Lane, indicates the Haverford Public School #5 building was completed in 1876. However, the building is not depicted on the 1877 G.M. Hopkins Philadelphia and Environs P. 64

2. Richard Kerr of the Haverford Township Historical Society, was able to see the back wall of the schoolhouse.

3. A report created by the "Superintendent of Public Instruction for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for the year ending June 7, 1886" stated: “The directors of Haverford have been planning to build another room in school No 5, in Haverford.”
