In 1889, the Preston Reading Room Association was founded by Joseph E. Rhoads. On July 27, 1889, Joseph Rhoads, Dr. Isaac Sharpless, and David Alsop purchased .41-acres (lot 23) from the estate of Annie Martin (b. May 10, 1824 - d. circa 1886). This parcel of land is located on the corner of Railroad Avenue and Buck Lane.
