Samuel Garrigues
(carpenter, farmer)
(b. Apr 17, 1772 - d. Jan 23, 1852)
Sarah Parker, wife
(b. Jan 24, 1768 -d. 21 Jan 1852)
Samuel's ancestors were Huguenot emigrants who settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1712. Samuel Garrigues was the son of William Garrigues (b. July 23, 1746). William was a well-respected Quaker who became a skilled carpenter and master builder. 1769, William and some other proficient craftsmen from Philadelphia founded the Friendship Carpenters' Company, which later merged with the Carpenter's Company in 1786. Moreover, in 1794, the Insurance Company of North America hired William to survey houses and buildings.

Samuel learned the art of carpentry from his father and found employment as a house carpenter in Philadelphia. He was known to be a taskmaster. Some family members even described him as an ‘autocrat,’ a harsh term during the 1800s.

On January 22, 1793, Samuel married Sarah Parker. They soon started a family and had their first child, Samuel Parker (constable), on November 28th of that same year.
